Day 216 Sunday, March 6th The road to Marahau Beach Camp-Snow!
We slept well enough on the camper’s thin mattress but could hear the non-stop rain outside all night. We had to put on the space heater since it got down to about 6°C and our duvet couldn’t cope. Then we woke to find snow on all the hills around us and fantastic views all around this peninsula. Scrambled eggs and toast from the camper’s stove top and then on to Blenheim, Picton (where the ferries leave for the north island) then the scenic Queen Charlotte drive to Havelock. The road hugged the ocean all the way but then we went inland and through the mountains to Nelson and were caught in a lightning and thunderstorm which turned into hailstorms and then snow. One car just ahead of us spun out and brought down the electrical wires and poles and so it was nose to tail for a while with ambulances and police cars.
Now we are camped just back from the beach at Marahau Beach Camp and have booked a water taxi for tomorrow- off at 9.00am along the Abel Tasman National Park coastline. We’ll take a 5 hour walk back from the drop point to our campsite.
I have discovered why the propane tank was empty when we picked up the camper. I’ve just completed a soap suds leak test and, sure enough, it’s bubbling up through one of the joints right at the back of the refrigerator motor-not a good thing. We cooked pasta and sauce (after crackers and camembert), coffee, red wine and a blueberry tart we bought at a bakery in Picton. We left the door open to blow away the spare Propane and then have turned it off for the night. I have to get this fixed.
