Day 40 Malta

Saturday, September 11th. Said goodbye to the girls and Kate’s boyfriend Nick and flew to Malta (actually a small island just off Malta called Gozo) for two weeks with old friends-the Frommels from Germany and the Scott-Smiths from England, that we often vacation with. Malta was very interesting with all of its history (home of the Knights of St John); Napoleon came and went; the Germans dropped three times as many bombs onto Malta and for three times longer than their bombing blitz of London as they tried to get it as a resupply base for Rommel in North Africa. The Maltese held out. Malta doesn’t have a lot of natural resources but they do have lots of stones and the Maltese build attractive houses with elaborate balconies. Viewing the massively defended harbor of Valetta from a boat tour is very worthwhile as is seeing the cathedral there and the other churches and castles on Malta. Christine narrowly escaped breaking her elbow and hip slipping on the wet marble floor of our bedroom after a thunderstorm blew rain in. We need to stay safe and well on this trip.
